Florida pushes for Arizona-style law

The US state of Florida is preparing a bill modeled after Arizona’s law to further control the flow of illegal immigrants into the coastal state.
Under the proposed bill, Florida police will be authorized to ask suspects for proof of legal residency, Associated Press reported on Saturday.
Florida’s Republican leaders have proposed the bill that has been widely backed within the party.
Immigrant advocates and Hispanic lawmakers have called the measure unconstitutional. They say it encourages racial profiling.
Both Senate and House leaders in Florida, however, say the bill has high chances of soon being passed.
Moreover, nearly 20 other states, including Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Minnesota, South Carolina and Michigan are crafting similar bills.
Arizona’s legislature signed the bill into law in April. The law drew massive protests in many states across the US.
At least five civil rights groups are challenging it in US courts.
