Unraveling food industry lies - That's not real olive oil you're using

Unraveling food industry lies - That's not real olive oil you're using

(NaturalNews) Considered by many to be one of the healthiest plant-based fats, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) has gained considerable notoriety in recent years for its ability to lower heart disease risk and cholesterol levels, among other benefits. Unfortunately, much of the so-called olive oil sold in stores today is not actually olive oil, but rather a deceptive blend of inferior oils that may or may not include traces of actual olive oil.

As surprising as it might seem, as much as 50 percent or more of all the olive oil sold commercially in the United States does not pass the stringent testing standards used to qualify the authenticity of real olive oil. As it turns out, many high-volume, non-certified olive oils may contain various blends of rapeseed (canola) oil, soybean oil, flavoring chemicals, and colors that give the illusion of real olive oil -- but in reality, these oils are nothing but frauds.

"As crazy as it sounds, olive oil piracy is one of the Italian Mafia's most lucrative enterprises, to the extent that it appears that most olive oil on the market is either greatly diluted or completely forged by a massive shadow industry that involves major names such as Bertolli," wrote Pauli Poisuo about the olive oil conspiracy in a piece for Cracked.com. (http://www.cracked.com)

Earlier in the year, NaturalNews also reported on the new book Extra Virginity: The Sublime and Scandalous World of Olive Oil, in which olive oil expert Tom Mueller takes his readers down the rabbit hole of olive oil fraud. Authentic olive oil typically has a vibrant green color (though not always), is often stored in amber, glass bottles to protect its flavor and quality, and often has a vibrant, peppery taste. Most olive oils, it turns out, do not pass these basic authenticity criteria, and are often diluted olive oils at best. (http://www.naturalnews.com/035124_olive_oil_adulterated_canola.html)

Tests conducted by researchers from both the University of California, Davis (UCD) and the Australian Oils Research Laboratory (AORL) back in 2010 also found that many major olive oil brands do not pass International Olive Council (IOC) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) authenticity tests for olive oil. The failing brands in this particular study included Bertolli, Mazzola, Pompeian, Carapelli, and Filippo Berio, among others.

How can you know if your olive oil is real?

There are a number of ways; however, by which you can test olive oil yourself to better determine whether or not it is authentic. Here are a few simple ways to decrease your risk of buying phony olive oil:

Look for the IOC label of authenticity on imported olive oils. Even though the IOC did not expressly agree with every tenet of the UCD study, the group has its own strict set of criteria by which it tests the authenticity of olive oils. Olive oils that bear official IOC labels of authenticity are very likely to actually be authentic.

Observe the texture, appearance of your olive oil when refrigerated. Authentic olive oil will typically become slightly cloudy and a bit thicker than normal when refrigerated. If your olive oil remains mostly the same consistency when refrigerated, it more than likely contains additive oils or is in some other way adulterated.

Check to see if your olive oil is flammable. Real olive oil is flammable, which means that it can essentially be used as a fuel source for an oil lamp. If your olive oil does not burn when lit with a match, it more than likely is an imposter.

Obama Adds Military Heroes to 'Enemies List'

President Barack Obama has added military heroes to his “enemies list,” singling out veterans’ groups such as Special Operations for America and Veterans for a Strong America on his campaign website, much as he singled out donors to Republican rival Mitt Romney for attack. Several veterans’ groups have spoken out against the Obama administration’s habit of taking credit for the Osama bin Laden raid and leaking military secrets for political gain--so the Obama campaign is trying to shoot the messenger.

The charge made by the Obama campaign is that the veterans’ groups are “Swift Boat 2.0”--referring to the group that launched a series of ads (never refuted) in 2004 contesting claims by then-Democrat presidential candidate John Kerry about his war record. Left-wing groups aligned with the Obama administration have even gone so far as to call the U.S. Navy Seals “gutless” for their participation in criticism of Obama.

Survivalist congressman advocates preparedness, says likelihood of civil unrest is 'high probability'

Survivalist congressman advocates preparedness, says likelihood of civil unrest is 'high probability'

(NaturalNews) You buy health insurance, car insurance and homeowners insurance. You buy life insurance as well, but Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, the senior Republican congressman from Maryland, has a different take on what life insurance really means.

"There are a number of events that could create a situation in the cities where civil unrest would be a very high probability," Bartlett - one of the country's most vocal advocates of preparing for the worst possible domestic situations - says in a new documentary called "Urban Danger," where he takes viewers on a tour of a cabin he maintains in rural West Virginia - a structure that is powered by the sun and by the wind.

Far from actually predicting that Doomsday is just over the horizon, Bartlett merely suggests being prepared for any eventuality. He's not so much a "survivalist," as many call him; he's a realist.

What would happen if the electrical grid failed, as Bartlett has often warned could happen? Store shelves would be emptied within a few hours. Water and sewage treatment plants would cease.

"We don't really think of those today, because it's so convenient to go to the supermarket," Bartlett said in an interview with the Bangor Daily News. "But you know, you're planning because the supermarket may not always be there."

'A high probability' of unrest?

Those who are called survivalists by the mainstream media and others are nothing more than average Americans who, for the most part, are simply advocating preparedness and self-sufficiency. For Bartlett, nothing less makes sense; he has even advocated that the more than 80 percent of Americans living in or near urban areas relocate.

"There are a number of events that could create a situation in the cities where civil unrest would be a very high probability," says Bartlett, 86, in his video. "And I think that those who can and those who understand need to take advantage of the opportunity when these winds of strife are not blowing, to move their families."

The longtime Maryland congressman is a patent-holding scientist, an engineer and a farmer. But he's also on the endangered Republican list because his reliably conservative district was recently redrawn by Maryland Democrats to include a hunk of reliably liberal Montgomery County. He will face Democrat John Delaney, a financier, in November, and handicappers are making him the underdog.

His potential defeat; however, hasn't deterred him from his mission to warn Americans about unforeseen game-changing events that could come to fruition in an increasingly unstable world.

For example, in late September he will be the keynote speaker at the second annual Sustainable Preparedness Expo 2,000 miles from his district, in Spokane, Wash.

What happens next?

Also, Bartlett recently met with like-minded experts on Capitol Hill to develop legislation that would require "every citizen to develop an individual emergency plan to prepare for the absence of government assistance for extended periods," and for localities to come up with the ability to provide 20 percent of their food, water and power needs.

The electrical grid is particularly vulnerable, both to internal collapse because of its aging infrastructure, and to terrorist attack.

"This is possibly the most serious threat the United States faces right now, because we are so utterly unprepared for it," Richard Andres, a senior fellow at National Defense University, told the paper.

Bartlett is well aware of the possibility - and the havoc it would wreak. He sees four possibilities for taking down the U.S. grid: via a terrorist attack, a cyber attack, a massive solar storm, or an EMP - electromagnetic pulse - attack, which is a nuclear detonation in the atmosphere which would fry computers and anything else with an electric circuit.

Bartlett's interest in survivalism began during the Cold War, when Americans built so-called nuclear fall-out shelters in case of an exchange with the Soviet Union. Bartlett says he wondered what folks would do next.

"When you came out of the fallout shelter, what then?" he said he often wondered.

After-Birth Abortion: Eugenicists Say Babies are a Parasitic Burden on Society

By Susanne Posel
theintelhub.com
August 21, 2012

According to Alberto Giubilini and Francesca Minerva, “after-birth abortion” is proposed as a form of “contraception” that would allow babies to be killed after they are born.

In a paper published in the Journal of Medical Ethics:

“[W]hen circumstances occur after birth such that they would have justified abortion, what we call after-birth abortion should be permissible. … [W]e propose to call this practice ‘after-birth abortion’, rather than ‘infanticide,’ to emphasize that the moral status of the individual killed is comparable with that of a fetus … rather than to that of a child.

Therefore, we claim that killing a newborn could be ethically permissible in all the circumstances where abortion would be. Such circumstances include cases where the newborn has the potential to have an (at least) acceptable life, but the well-being of the family is at risk.”

Giubilini and Minerva believe that infants are a “threat” to parents because of their financial burden to their parents and that this justifies the murder of new-born babies.

In the Senate, Joe Pitts and Chris Smith spoke out against this ideology. Smith explains: “Giubilini and Minerva say the devaluation of new-born babies is inextricably linked to the devaluation of unborn children.”

Ann Furedi of the British Pregnancy Advisory Board stated that it was of no consequence to define the point when a fetus is subject to legal limitation with regard to abortion rights.

Giubilini and Minerva agree with this summation by stating that “merely being human is not in itself a reason for ascribing someone a right to life. Indeed, many humans are not considered subjects of a right to life,” such as “spare embryos where research on embryo stem cells is permitted” or “fetuses where abortion is permitted.”

Johnson & Johnson owns up to deadly formaldehyde-containing products in wake of bacteria scandal

Johnson & Johnson owns up to deadly formaldehyde-containing products in wake of bacteria scandal

(NaturalNews) After struggling to maintain its image following a barrage of product recalls and safety scares, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has announced that it plans to reformulate not only its entire line of children's personal care products, but also many of its adult personal care products, to remove a number of chemicals and chemical byproducts that have been the topic of public concern in recent years.

By 2015, virtually all J&J consumer care products will be free of preservative chemicals that release methylene glycol, the alcohol form of formaldehyde, which has been identified as a cancer-causing agent. J&J also plans to remove preservative chemicals that produce 1,4 dioxane, a chemical also linked to causing cancer. (http://www.naturalnews.com/028846_laundry_detergents_dioxane.html)

"There's a very lively public discussion going on about the safety of ingredients in personal care products, (and) it was really important that we had a voice in that," said Susan Nettesheim, J&J's Vice President for Product Stewardship. Though Nettesheim insists that the existing chemicals used in J&J products are safe, she also says her company is trying to respond to the concerns of its customers.

J&J has even created a website dedicated to this transition to new product formulations, many of which will take place even sooner than 2015, at least in products designed for children and babies. The site, entitled Our Safety & Care Commitment, explains how the company will eventually phase out phthalates, triclosan, parabens, fragrances, and many other questionable chemicals from its product lines in years to come.

"We've never really seen a major personal care product company take the kind of move that they're taking with this," said Kenneth A. Cook, President of the Environmental Working Group (EWG), about J&J's decision to be an industry leader in this particular area. Cook even expressed a bit of surprise that a company as large as J&J has decided to take on the incredible, and quite costly, task of reformulating even its signature formulas, to which many people have grown accustomed.

In the process of phasing out its questionable ingredients, J&J says it plans to conduct extensive research on potential alternative ingredients to ensure their safety. When all is said and done, only a few J&J products will still contain trace levels of formaldehyde and 1,4 dioxane, as well as certain fragrance chemicals. Most J&J products; however, will eventually be free of phthalates, triclosan, parabens, and formaldehyde.

"We want to share our policies and plans in a forum that is designed to help consumers better understand what we do to ensure that the products they choose are as safe as can be," added Nettesheim.

Fifty food items to stockpile now: Health Ranger releases preparedness foods shopping list

Fifty food items to stockpile now: Health Ranger releases preparedness foods shopping list

(NaturalNews) With food prices skyrocketing and food supplies looking increasingly questionable for 2013, you'll be happy to know I've selected and assembled a list of recommended storable foods from a trusted discount source. All the foods listed below have a great shelf life, from two years to a decade. In this article, I've listed two sources: 1) Things you can buy at your local grocery store, and 2) Things you can get at a discount at an online organic foods retailer.

Remember: The U.S. government is stockpiling food (and ammo, too) like crazy. Even the government's website www.Ready.gov encourages citizens to stock up on emergency supplies and "make a plan." The word "stockpiling" used to have a negative meaning, describing "hoarding" behavior. But these days the word "stockpiling" simply describes smart people who are intelligently preparing to protect themselves, their families and even their local communities (church groups, neighborhoods, etc.) from the possibility of serious disruptions in the food supply.

Keep in mind that not everything I list below is organic. Although I'm a huge advocate of organic foods, when it comes to storable foods I often bend my own rule and allow for non-organic because it's for emergency use. (I'm not eating these foods every day, so I'm not as concerned about the non-organic status.)

For the first preparedness shopping list shown below, you can order any or all of these (choose your own quantities) on this special page I've personally prepared for you at
www.GreenPolkaDotBox.com

Use coupon code NN50 to save $50 off your first order, essentially giving you a FREE membership in this online buying club (which is much like Costco or Sam's Club).

The second list focuses on items you can buy at any grocery store, right now!

Shopping list items selected by the Health Ranger

Bay Harbor brand - Clam Chowder, Fish Chowder, Fish Stock, Whole Maine Cherrystone Clams - I'm really liking the Bay Harbor brand of clam chowder and fish chowder. Although not certified organic, this is the only chowder I've ever found that isn't salted to death. The quality of the chowder is excellent, the spices are completely natural, and they use no MSG or chemical garbage. Personally, I've stocked up on 48 cans of their clam chowder and 48 cans of their fish chowder, and this will be my backup supply of chowder in case the food supplies get disrupted.

Sensible Foods - CherryBerry Crunch Dried Fruit, Tropical Blend - Although not certified organic, this provides a long-term storable supply of fruit nutrients which are crucial if you're living in stressful times. Lots of natural vitamin C in these fruits, and the shelf life is at least 2 years.

Artisana - Extra Virgin Coconut Oil - This is a very high quality brand of 100% Cold-pressed Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil. I like coconut oil as a preparedness item because it's a food, a topical healing substance, and it can even be used as a mechanical lubricant in a pinch.

Bob's Red Mill - Bountiful Black Bean Soup Mix - It's a great way to store a large quantity of "soup potential" in a small space. It's made of Black Beans, Black-Eyes Peas, Pearly Barley and Navy Beans. Add some coconut oil to the soup mix and you've got a healthy fat.

Bob's Red Mill - Vegi Soup Mix - I like this soup mix because it's delicious, easy to make and uses no MSG or other weird chemicals. Ingredients include Green Split Peas, Yellow Split Peas, Barley, Lentils and Vegetable Pasta (Containing Whole Wheat Flour, Dehydrated Spinach, Tomato, Celery, Onion, Beets, Garlic).

Bob's Red Mill - Organic Creamy Buckwheat Hot Cereal - A super healthy, high-protein cereal that's great for survival and preparedness. Better than oatmeal for this purpose.

Carrington Farms - Organic Milled Flax Paks - 100% Organic Cold Milled Micro Cleansed Flax Seed - I've found these to be outstanding portable packets of flax seeds, an important source of omega-3 fatty acids. Most flax packs are too large, and flax tends to go rancid very quickly, so these small packs are perfect for portable food storage. You can use these in oatmeal, smoothies, salads, bake mixes, and practically anywhere.

Coconut Secret - Raw Coconut Crystals - These are very handy as a natural sweetener. They contain far more minerals than processed white sugar, and in a collapse scenario, natural sweeteners will be a fantastic barter item.

Newman's Own - Raisins - Believe it or not, raisins are a fantastic form of portable nutrition and healthy calories. They should be part of any food preparedness shopping list.

3 Tray Stackable Sprout Garden - Perfect for sprouting, which is one of the most important methods for growing your own nutrition and having live foods during hard times. (Also be sure to acquire a good supply of sprouting seeds. I like alfalfa the best.)

Wild Planet Foods - Wild Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil - A great source of omega-3 fatty acids from fish. Long shelf life, portable and easy to barter, too. More valuable than gold when people are starving...

Fine Ground Celtic Sea Salt in Resealable Bag - Don't skimp on the salt! Salt will be hard to come by in a food supply collapse. You'll need more salt than you probably think, and salt stores for a long, long time as long as you keep it dry.

Sprout Baby Food - Beef & Vegetable Lasagna - Believe it or not, these "Sprout Baby Food" products are better than most storable foods. They're only lightly salted, so you'll need to add your own salt. The ingredients are mostly organic, and the small packs are very portable, easy to carry (even in your pockets), and easy to barter.

Essential Living Foods - Superfood Smoothie Mix - This is an excellent smoothie base, into which you can add fruits or other items. Ingredients are: Raw Hemp Seed Powder*, Brazil Nut Powder*, Mesquite Powder*, Coconut Sugar*, Raw Lucuma Powder*, Raw Goji Berry Powder*, Raw Acai Powder*, Raw Vanilla Bean Powder*. *Organic

Camu Camu Powder - An excellent, natural source of vitamin C. Very potent. Store this in the refrigerator or freezer, if possible.

Acai Powder - Powerful nutrients for sweetening any smoothie. Loaded with antioxidants and other phytonutrients. Store this in the refrigerator or freezer, if possible.

See the discount prices on all these items (and more) on my personal selection page at
www.GreenPolkaDotBox.com

Use coupon code NN50 to save $50 off your first order, which completely offsets the cost of membership.

Recommended storable foods you can acquire at any grocery store

These items are very low cost, loaded with nutrients, and are easy to store:

• Sugar (not to eat, but to barter with. Never eat white processed sugar.) Buy coconut sugar if you can.
• Pepper (a basic spice, easy to store, easy to barter).
• Mustard (excellent nutrition, believe it or not. Made from mustard seeds.)
• Raisins (easy to store and barter)
• Lard (yeah, lard. On a cold winter's night when the heat is off, you'll wish you had some soup made with lard... and it's healthier than "vegetable oil" which is mostly GMO soybean oil anyway.)
• Butter
• Pickled vegetables (all kinds, including sauerkraut)
• Coffee (even if you don't drink it, you can barter it. People will be desperate.)
• Coffee filters (can also be used to help filter water, cooking oil and other items)
• Brown rice (large bags)
• Steel-cut oatmeal
• Local honey (stored practically forever)
• Sardines and anchovies packed in olive oil (excellent storable omega-3s)
• Sea salt (you almost can't have too much salt stored away...)
• Yet more sea salt
• And even MORE sea salt, because you will run out in a prolonged collapse scenario.
• Peanut butter (portable, high calories, which you'll need)
• Canned meats (long shelf life)
• Canned vegetables (you'll need the nutrients)
• Natural dried meats (AVOID all MSG!)
• Nuts and nut mixes (almonds, cashews, etc.)
• Cans of coconut milk or coconut fat (adds delicious flavor to any meal)
• Spare can openers, kitchen knife, small cutting board, etc.

How to store these foods

For things like the soup mixes, you can't just store the bags without protection from rodents. You'll need to acquire 5-gallon pails with sturdy lids. You can get these locally at a hardware store such as Home Depot or Lowe's. Pack the foods in the pails, then attach the lids securely. This will keep out mice, ants, and so on.

You can also sprinkle some DE (diatomaceous earth) in the pails, around the floor, etc., to discourage insects and ants. DE is harmless to humans unless you inhale it. You can actually eat small quantities of it quite safely (some people actually use it as a detox supplement).

Obviously, do not use chemical insecticides of any kind, as they are likely to contaminate your stored food.

Store all your food in a cool, dry, dark place. A dry root cellar is ideal. Refrigerate foods if you have refrigeration space.

Items like salt and honey can store literally for thousands of years under the right conditions. Beans and grains can typically be stored for 5 - 10 years. More perishable items such as raisins are usually only good for 1-2 years. Canned foods and items like sardines are typically good for 2-3 years, depending on the item.

If you do eat some of your preparedness items on a regular basis, make sure you eat the older items first. Many preparedness experts recommend "store what you eat, and eat what you store" in order to keep your food supplies rotated and fresh. Personally, I differ a bit from that because I tend to eat fresh foods while storing non-fresh foods.

The important thing is to get squared away now, while foods are cheap and readily available. Through Green PolkaDot Box, I've selected items that I recommend for preparedness, and that list of what you'll see on the page at www.GreenPolkaDotBox.com.

(Use coupon code NN50 to save $50 off your first order.)

Shipping is free on orders over $75 (see their website for details), so you pay nothing for shipping. With the help of Green PolkaDot Box, many of my own friends and family members have been able to get stocked up while saving money on storable foods. This has been a real money-saver for many people I know.

Get started there today while the $50 credit remains available (using coupon code NN50 at checkout). If you're already a member, review the list of the foods I've selected there, and see if any of those make sense for you as preparedness items.

For the record, by the way, this list I've shared here is NOT a complete list of everything you need. It's just a list to get started. Beyond this list, you will obviously need a water filter, a light source, a heat source, self defense items, communications gear, cooking utensils, emergency medicine herbs and tinctures, and many other similar items. Keep reading NaturalNews for more preparedness ideas and recommendations, as we will continue to cover this topic on a regular basis.

Final thoughts: Beyond food, you also need garden seeds

One thing I know without question is that, throughout history, every collapse scenario has caused a food crisis where people went hungry. The best way to insulate yourself from that -- and to promote calm during a crisis -- is to have a supply of several month's worth of food already squared away. Most of us who are into real preparedness have at least one year's worth of food stored for the entire family. (That's a lot of food, and it takes a lot of space.) But even if you're starting from scratch, you can at least store up a few weeks worth of food to get started. From there, you can add to it as you find the funds.

Oh, and by the way, if you're looking for what I believe to be the world's best selection of 100% heirloom survival garden seeds, the answer is right here:

http://www.supplysource.com/surthrival-seed-can

Description from the site:

"Why in the World are They Spraying?" Full Length Documentary HD

Monsanto buys leading bee research firm after being implicated in bee colony collapse

Monsanto buys leading bee research firm after being implicated in bee colony collapse

(NaturalNews) Amid all the controversy over genetically-modified (GM) crops and their pesticides and herbicides decimating bee populations all around the world, biotechnology behemoth Monsanto has decided to buy out one of the major international firms devoted to studying and protecting bees. According to a company announcement, Beeologics handed over the reins to Monsanto back on September 28, 2011, which means the gene-manipulating giant will now be able to control the flow of information and products coming from Beeologics for colony collapse disorder (CCD).

Since 2007, Beeologics has been studying CCD, as well as Israeli Acute Paralysis Virus (IAPV), for the purpose of coming up with intervention-based ways to mitigate these conditions. And based on the way the company describes both CCD and IAPV on its website, Beeologics has largely taken the approach that intervention, rather than prevention, is the key to solving the global bee crisis.

Now that Beeologics is owned and controlled by Monsanto, the company is sure to completely avoid dealing with the true causes of CCD and IAPV as they pertain to Monsanto's crop technologies -- GMOs and their chemical counterparts. So going into the future, it seems expected that Beeologics will come up with "scientific breakthroughs" that deny any link between CCD and GMO technologies, and instead blame mystery pathogens and other factors that require more chemicals to eliminate.

According to Anthony Gucciardi at Activist Post, Beeologics has also long had a cozy relationship with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which is convenient for Monsanto. The USDA, in fact, considers Beeologics to be one of the foremost bee research organizations in the world, as does the USDA's Agricultural Research Service (ARS), the mainstream media and "leading entomologists" worldwide, according to the company.

Monsanto to use Beeologics' 'biological tools' to develop more GMOs, crop chemicals

Beeologics' acquisition announcement explains that Monsanto plans to incorporate all the biological research that Beeologics has conducted over the years into its own programs for developing more GMO systems. Monsanto has also seized control of a key product that is currently in the Beeologics development pipeline that supposedly "help[s] protect bee health."

"Monsanto will use the base technology from Beeologics as a part of its continuing discovery and development pipeline," says the announcement. "Biological products will continue to play an increasingly important role in supporting the sustainability of many agricultural systems."

To translate, it appears as though Monsanto plans to use even more chemical inputs to supposedly solve the bee collapse problem, even though it is these very inputs that are largely the cause of the bee collapse problem. Several recent studies, after all, have definitively linked crop pesticides and herbicides, as well as high fructose corn syrup, to CCD.

The future looks bleak for bees, in other words, as Monsanto appears poised to slowly gobble up all the competing companies and organizations that threaten its own GMO products, while pretending to care about the dwindling bee populations. And unless drastic action is taken to stop Monsanto in its continued quest to dominate global agriculture, the food supply as we know it will soon be a thing of the past.
