Studies show chlorella could improve insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes patients

Studies show chlorella could improve insulin sensitivity in type 2 diabetes patients

(NaturalNews) There have been studies under the radar of public awareness or mainstream media disclosure demonstrating chlorella's ability to improve diabetic symptoms. It's certain that very few MDs know of these studies.

It seems that the wonders of this single-cell microalgae superfood continue to surface. Chlorella has demonstrated several immune system benefits, detoxification benefits, liver health enhancement, and even anticancer activities.

Now it looks like diabetes 2 and prediabetic or metabolic disorder individuals can address those issues directly with chlorella while enjoying all the other benefits this centuries-old, fresh water, green microalgae can offer.

Three studies for chlorella's affect on insulin and blood sugar issues

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas to metabolize nutrients, especially glucose, primarily for energy needs but for other functions as well. Diabetes 1 sufferers have insufficient pancreatic functions of insulin, while type 2 diabetics are "insulin resistant." Their pancreas is pumping insulin, but cells are not taking it in for metabolic energy conversion. [1]

Just before the type 2 diabetes designation comes a prediabetic situation commonly called metabolic syndrome or metabolic disorder syndrome. This malady is characterized by obesity, hypertension, high blood sugar, high liver triglyceride counts and early signs of some insulin resistance. [2]

All of these situations can be improved with chlorella consumption.

A study from Seoul, South Korea, published in a 2009 edition of Nutrition Research and Practice used two types of rats. One type had diabetes type 2 and the other type was normal.

Both types were subdivided into three groups according to the percentage of Chlorella vulgaris in their diets: 0 percent, 1 percent and 5 percent.

After measuring several markers in all sets of rats, the researchers decided that their study provided enough positive information about chlorella's ability to reverse high blood sugar, or hyperglycemia, without pushing the pancreas to produce more insulin.

Instead, chlorella was able to create a hypoglycemic effect that countered the insulin resistance-induced hyperglycemia. [3]

Another Korean study with Chlorella vulgaris and rats (chlorella is popular in East Asia) took two sets of rats separated by diets. One group was fed a normal diet, while the other was fed a high fat diet.

Then those groups were subdivided further into no chlorella, 5 percent chlorella and 10 percent chlorella in their diets for nine weeks.

"In conclusion, 10% Chlorella intake was more effective for blood glucose regulation than 5% Chlorella intake in rats fed a high fat diet. Chlorella intake may prevent insulin resistance in Wistar rats fed a high fat diet."

Well good for the rats. But what about we humans? Here's a study that promotes human use.

This study was conducted in Taiwan. Again, rats were used, but this time some rats were fed fructose-rich chow and then fed chlorella. Perhaps this was to mimic the high HFCS processed food diet that has taken over most industrialized regions. Even with too much fructose, the rats fed chlorella fared well.

Their conclusion: "The obtained results suggest that oral administration of Chlorella has the ability to improve insulin sensitivity, which may be used as an adjuvant therapy for patients with insulin resistance." [Emphasis added]

These studies demonstrate the potential for using chlorella to prevent or diminish insulin resistance and high blood glucose issues, even diabetes type 2, while enjoying chlorella's detoxification and immune-boosting dynamics.

Remember, chlorella is a food, not a synthetically derived supplement. Anywhere from 3 to 5 grams intake daily is recommended for generally improving health, while more may be added for intensely therapeutic purposes.

Oral consumption of spirulina extract enhances antitumor natural killer cells

Oral consumption of spirulina extract enhances antitumor natural killer cells

(NaturalNews) Researchers have discovered breakthrough advances in antitumor immunotherapy in the wake of an eye-opening study showing how spirulina extract activates natural killer cells to destroy tumors.

What are natural killer cells?

Natural killer cells are the body's rapid responders when cells are under attack from virus or tumor formation. These unique cells can recognize viruses and tumors in the absence of antibodies and signal molecules, making them a potent innate immune system defender. NT cells are also great communicators, regulating interactions with macrophages and dendritic, endothelial and T cells. They possess the unique ability to limit or increase immune responses. Learning how to make these cells work is critical for helping people control inflammation, autoimmune disorders and tumors.

Spirulina extract eliminates tumors by exciting natural killer cell response

In a study from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Hokkaido University in Japan, spirulina extract was found to excite antitumor natural killer cell response.

For their study, the researchers transplanted tumors into a specific species of mice. After orally administering hot water extracts of spirulina to the mice, they watched for molecular signals in the major histocompatibility complex of the mice cells. At first, a sub cell line showed slight expressions of NT response, but as the study furthered, they noticed natural killer cell activation signals going off through expressions of Rae-1, a ligand for NK activation.

With natural killer cells now arriving onto the scene of the tumor-ridden cells, the implanted melanoma slowly regressed, until the natural killer cell defense effectively eliminated the entire tumor.

Molecular communications with in vitro bone-marrow-derived dendritic cells showed further natural killer cell activation properties that were derived from the oral spirulina treatments. Furthermore, through studies of cellular communication, the researchers noted that spirulina enhances NK activation against tumors through one specific pathway in the mice. A specific immune cell also worked in coordination with spirulina to exert synergistic antitumor activity. This BCG cell wall skeleton worked with spirulina to boost IFN gamma production, strengthening antitumor potential. When the two are used simultaneously, natural killer cells increase down the specific MYD88 pathway, creating an antitumor immunotherapy advantage.

Why spirulina is a must-have super food

Spirulina's antitumor capacity is just another credential to its long list of health benefits as a superfood.

Loaded with all eight essential amino acids, B vitamins and antioxidants like zeaxanthin and beta carotene, spirulina is indeed an immune system booster. With essential fatty acids like linolenic acid and probiotic strains, it's no wonder why tumors cannot coexist with spirulina.

Full of chlorophyll and phycocyanin, spirulina is also a potent blood purifier, helping transport oxygen to cells, as it promotes blood cell growth and rejuvenation to the body's existing supply.

Spirulina also helps detoxify the body in a major way, moving out metals like mercury, arsenic and cadmium that can accumulate in the soft tissues and compete with minerals like calcium for absorption.

As spirulina moves the bad out of the body, letting the good in, it is indeed a miracle in itself, also containing nearly 70 percent protein - more than any other food yet discovered. Daily consumption of this blue green algae leads to an influx of life-giving phytonutrients that promote mental clarity, energy and stamina in times of mental and emotional stress.

Tell your doctor that spirulina helps kill tumors

There really isn't a reason not to consume this wonderful algae. As scientists begin to understand spirulina's immunotherapy benefits, including its ability to eliminate tumors, how long will it be before the medical establishments puts down their radiation equipment and starts attacking cancer at its roots?

As a matter of fact, now is a great time to stop running around in pink ribbons, pink shirts, slogans and pink underwear. It's time to start standing up to the cancer industry. Talk to your doctor, your friends, your family about the antitumor, natural killer cell-stimulating properties of the nutrient-dense, blue green algae called spirulina.

Top Generals Reveal Obama’s Secret High Level Military Purge

In Obama’s America, the military must forsake their constitutional oath in favor of blind allegiance to their new commander. And whether it’s top nuke commanders being removed for failing to play ball with the global elite, or just silencing potential whistleblowers, top military generals are now speaking out about the ‘mass purge’ within the United States military.
obama-army-terminations
Top Army generals reveal Obama’s crusade against high level military generals who will not play ball.
One such general, a recipient of the Medal of Honor, has now gone on record in speaking with news organization WND about the mass culling of high level military officers on behalf of the Obama administration. Retired Army Maj. Gen. Patrick Brady says that the attack on high level military personnel is so great that it has now obliterated the morale of troops at large, but is more importantly centered in terminating any high level individual that will not go along with the plan.
“There is no doubt he (Obama) is intent on emasculating the military and will fire anyone who disagrees with him,” the retired general told WND.
General Brady’s admission comes just after two of the top nuclear commanders in the United States were terminated and suspended amid the high level military intelligence we released surrounding the secret transfer of nuclear weapons from a Texas Airforce base to South Carolina. And while the terminations were originally reported on by the Associated Press, who has been covering the issue in depth and even hinting towards our coverage of the missing nuke within their reports, it was revealed by the agency that the terminations and suspensions were actually found out through leaked emails.
In other words, the mass purge of military officials was never truly intended to meet the public eye. But even in the face of government secrecy surrounding the issue, numerous news organizations and media figures have now come out and highlighted the purge of top nuke commanders and others. From Michael Savage launching an investigation into the missing nuke issue and calling for answers, to WND questioning officials over the military intelligence.
Overall, the new media has forced this issue into the spotlight, reaching millions with the powerful information that has been confirmed time and time again by scenarios like Senator Lindsey Graham’s same day speech regarding a nuclear strike on the exact destination of the nuclear warheads. Meanwhile, the establishment has been busy in attempting to eliminate high level military officers who will not blindly follow commander Obama on his every unconstitutional demand.

Confirmed: NSA has broken into Google, Yahoo data centers and now monitors all web searches, Gmail

(NaturalNews) If the reports earlier this summer detailing how the National Security Agency monitors all data passing through the nation's internet service providers and tech companies was a little too much to digest or accept, that's understandable.

After all, this is America, right? And the NSA isn't supposed to be spying on Americans.

Only, it does, as a new report proves beyond any doubt.

According to The Washington Post, the NSA has managed to secretly hack into the main communication links that connect Yahoo! and Google data centers to the rest of the world, as per documents obtained from former NSA contractor-turned-fugitive Edward Snowden, as well as interviews with insider officials.

The paper said:

By tapping those links, the agency has positioned itself to collect at will from among hundreds of millions of user accounts, many of them belonging to Americans. The NSA does not keep everything it collects, but it keeps a lot.

MUSCULAR, PRISM data collection programs

A top-secret accounting dated Jan. 9, 2013, provided details about how the NSA's acquisitions directorate sends millions of records daily from Yahoo and Google internal networks to databases located at the agency's headquarters at Fort Meade, Md.

In the 30 days prior, the report noted, field collectors processed and returned 181,280,466 new records, ranging from "metadata," which can provide information about who actually sent and received emails and when and content like text, video and audio.

The Post reported:

The NSA's principal tool to exploit the data links is a project called MUSCULAR, operated jointly with the agency's British counterpart, GCHQ. From undisclosed interception points, the NSA and GCHQ are copying entire data flows across fiber-optic cables that carry information between the data centers of the Silicon Valley giants.

The infiltration is especially striking because the NSA, under a separate program known as PRISM, has front-door access to Google and Yahoo user accounts through a court-approved process.

But apparently, even that access - authorized by the USA Patriot Act - isn't good enough. Obviously, the NSA wants no oversight of its activities at all.

The Post said the MUSCULAR project looked to be "an unusually aggressive use" of NSA capabilities against American tech companies. To be sure, the NSA is built to conduct high-tech spying, and has a wide range of digital tools at its disposal, but has no previous reputation of using them at will against U.S. firms.

Despite the revelations, no one in government wanted to talk about them on the record. "White House officials and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which oversees the NSA, declined to confirm, deny or explain why the agency infiltrates Google and Yahoo networks overseas," the Post reported.

Privacy? What privacy?

Google released a statement saying the company was certainly "troubled by allegations of the government intercepting traffic between our data centers, and we are not aware of this activity."

"We have long been concerned about the possibility of this kind of snooping, which is why we continue to extend encryption across more and more Google services and links," the company said.

A spokeswoman from Yahoo added: "We have strict controls in place to protect the security of our data centers, and we have not given access to our data centers to the NSA or to any other government agency."

According to earlier releases of top secret information by Snowden, the PRISM program is used by the NSA to gather incredible amounts of online communications records through legal means; tech companies, via warrants issued by the secret FISA court, are compelled to turn over data matching the court's approved search terms.

That program is authorized under Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

"Intercepting communications overseas has clear advantages for the NSA, with looser restrictions and less oversight. NSA documents about the effort refer directly to 'full take,' 'bulk access' and 'high volume' operations on Yahoo and Google networks," the Post reported. "Such large-scale collection of Internet content would be illegal in the United States, but the operations take place overseas, where the NSA is allowed to presume that anyone using a foreign data link is a foreigner."

In today's online, interconnected world, America, you have no more privacy. That should be crystal clear by now.

Oh, and the NSA's spying and data storage capability is only going to increase. The agency is building a massive new facility in Utah for just those purposes, among others: http://nsa.gov1.info.

Obama knew a month before launch that Healthcare.gov would be a disaster

Obama knew a month before launch that Healthcare.gov would be a disaster

(NaturalNews) When government officials are caught in a web of deceit or corruption, the first couple of questions usually asked by the media and investigators are, "What did they know, and when did they know it?"

A story published this week by CNN answers those two questions, revealing that the president and his staff knew that the Healthcare.gov online insurance marketplace wasn't ready to be unveiled at least a month before its official Oct. 1 launch.

As reported by CNN:

The Obama administration was given stark warnings just one month before launch that the federal healthcare site was not ready to go live, according to a confidential report obtained by CNN.

The caution, from the main contractor CGI, warned of a number of open risks and issues for the HealthCare.gov web site even as company executives were testifying publicly that the project had achieved key milestones.

'We tested it and things were just fine'

During testimony on Capitol Hill earlier this week, Medicaid Chief Marilyn Tavenner, who is in charge of overseeing the Oct. 1 launch of the online health exchange, said she had no clue about the problems.

"No, we had tested the website and we were comfortable with its performance," she said, stretching her credibility. "Now, like I said, we knew all along there would be as with any new website, some individual glitches we would have to work out. But, the volume issue and the creation of account issues was not anticipated and obviously took us by surprise. And did not show up in testing."

And yet, according to Section 1.5 of the CGI document, dated August 2013, which was sent to Tavenner's Center for Medicare and Medicaid, the "timeframe for testing" was deemed inadequate "to complete full functional, system and integration testing," a problem the company deemed "significant."

Other integration issues were labeled "severe" and "significant." And the document further described "top risks currently open," as well as "outstanding issues currently being mitigated."

The element listed as "not enough time in schedule to conduct adequate performance testing" was given the highest priority.

As further reported by CNN:

CGI had no comment other than to confirm authenticity of the report that also gave "the highest priority" and warns "we don't have access to monitoring tools" and "hub services are intermittently unavailable" -- short for the "site's not working sometimes."

Brian Cook, a spokesman for Medicare and Medicaid services, whitewashed the CGI report, saying it was "not a dire warning" but rather a "list of things to do," if read in whole.

"What's been done, what needs to be done, what needs to be resolved. It is misleading to cherry pick a few lines," he said, adding that the report identified issues, and "we worked to address those issues and all issues identified."

And yet, the description of the problems appears to be plain.

Hey, you don't ever have enough time to test

CNN said it wasn't clear whether a later report detailed that the issues were resolved. But given the site's atrocious roll-out, it's apparent that much of what needed to be done, wasn't done.

Also, the report's warnings run afoul of the rosy picture painted by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in an earlier interview with the cable network's Dr. Sanjay Gupta, when she said Oct. 1's roll-out would go smoothly.

Cheryl Campbell, a Senior Vice President for CGI Federal, also whitewashed the situation (And why not? Her company was getting hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars.). She told lawmakers on Capitol Hill October 25, "no one ever gets enough time for testing."

And yet, when she was on Capitol Hill in September, she failed to raise any alarm bells when she told a House panel she was sure her company could get the job done.

"To date, the marketplace implementation has achieved all of its key milestones from the initial architecture review in October 2011 to project baseline review in March 2012 and, most recently, the operational readiness review in September 2013," she said, before the website went live.

Naked Juice class action settlement announced: Here's how to claim $45 from PepsiCo even without proof of purchase

Naked Juice class action settlement announced: Here's how to claim $45 from PepsiCo even without proof of purchase

(NaturalNews) The Naked Juice company was sued in 2011, accused of using GMO ingredients and deceptively labeling its products, "all natural." As the Organic Consumers Association explains:

According to plaintiffs, Naked Juice used soy ingredients that are genetically engineered "by design or by contamination." (Naked Juice doesn't use certified organic or verified non-GMO soy.) Naked Juice intentionally used misleading language to give consumers "the false impression that the beverage's vitamin content is due to the nutritious fruits and juices, rather than added synthetic compounds." And the PepsiCo subsidiary contained a laundry list of synthetic chemicals, including calcium pantothenate (synthetically produced from formaldehyde).

PepsiCo, of course, is the owner of Naked Juice and also the same company that bankrolled the defeat of Prop 37 in California, the "Right to Know" GMO labeling campaign.

Starting today, you may now be eligible to receive up to $45 directly from PepsiCo. Any person who claims to have purchased Naked Juice -- even if they have NO PROOF of such a purchase -- can now participate in the class action claims and receive up to a $45 check as part of the settlement.

IMPORTANT: Share this story with others to spread this news so that as many people as possible legitimately claim their portion of this settlement!

I realize $45 isn't a lot of money, especially if you've probably spent far more than that on Naked Juice since 2007, the time window covered by this class action settlement. Nevertheless, if enough people participate in this class action claim, it will not only cost PepsiCo $9 million in payouts, it will also send a powerful message that consumers are fed up with being deceived about the products they purchase.

So Natural News is officially requesting that all readers who purchased Naked Juice in the last six years file a settlement claim and get your check for up to $45 from PepsiCo.

You can file your claim at this website:
www.NakedJuiceClass.com

The direct link to the claim form is here:
http://www.nakedjuiceclass.com/FileClaim/Unk...

To file a claim, you will have to give this website your name and address. I cannot guarantee your privacy if you participate in this process, as we do not control the settlement website. Presumably, your name will be protected by the courts on this, but ya never know...

The deadline for submitting your claim is December 17, 2013.

Please join me in sharing this story everywhere so that everyone who legitimately qualifies for this settlement participates and receives compensation from Naked Juice.

Please note that according to the legal documents posted on the settlement website, Naked Juice can still jerk everyone around on this and refuse to pay your claim if they believe your claim is false. If that happens to you, please let us know here at Natural News so that we can break the story about how Naked Juice is refusing to pay settlement claims (if this occurs, that is).

Also, for the record, in no way does Natural News encourage anyone to falsely file a claim if they never actually purchased Naked Juice products. Be honest but spread the word, too, because this settlement likely affects tens of millions of people in the U.S. alone!

File your claim at:

USDA seeks to poison consumers by contaminating almonds with neurological poison

USDA seeks to poison consumers by contaminating almonds with neurological poison

(NaturalNews) Don't look now, but the federal Leviathan thinks all raw almonds - including those grown organically - are so dangerous for you, they should be cooked, even if it means using a known carcinogen.

According to the Alliance for Natural Health, the state of California's Almond Board, in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, proposed an industry-wide "mandatory sterilization" rule in 2007 requiring all almonds, even those grown organically, to be pasteurized, in response to a string of salmonella outbreaks in 2001 and 2004 (as compared to, say, a rash of deaths caused by prescription drugs each year). 33 people became ill, but there were no deaths.

The Almond Board says five methods of "pasteurization" are allowed. They include: oil roasting, dry roasting, blanching, steam processing and, incredibly, the use of propylene oxide (PPO), which is, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, a "probable human carcinogen."

A sixth method involved irradiating the almonds, which was actually used for many years, the ANH said, but now the Almond Board says almond pasteurization no longer includes irradiation.

The ANH says the first three methods certainly cook the nuts, meaning they are no longer raw; of the last two methods, steam "causes a marked reduction in nutrient content and partially cooks the nuts." Then, of course, there is the PPO method, which uses an extremely volatile liquid that is also used in the making of polyurethane plastics. Yum.

A host of medical problems associated with PPO

In fact, PPO was once utilized as a racing fuel, but was actually banned by the National Hot Rod and American Motorcycle Racing associations for being too dangerous. It is so dangerous it's actually used in fuel-air bombs.

According to a material data safety sheet on PPO, there is this warning:

Causes gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. May cause central nervous system depression, characterized by excitement, followed by headache, dizziness, drowsiness, and nausea. Advanced stages may cause collapse, unconsciousness, coma and possible death due to respiratory failure. Aspiration of material into the lungs may cause chemical pneumonitis, which may be fatal...May cause reproductive and fetal effects. Laboratory experiments have resulted in mutagenic effects. May cause heritable genetic damage.

The Environmental Protection Agency is fully aware of the dangers of PPO as well. The agency says even short-term exposure to the chemical has caused irritation to the eyes and respiratory system, as well as to the skin. In addition, the agency notes the chemical is a mild central nervous system depressant and that it causes inflammatory nasal cavity, trachea and lung lesions.

In studies on animals, PPO is known to cause debilitating neurological effects that have led to tumors, causing the EPA to classify it as a class B2 carcinogen. The states of California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Massachusetts have listed it on their state right-to-know registries as a known carcinogen.

All in all then, for raw almonds, the choice is either to cook them or potentially make them toxic, the ANH said, noting there is a definite financial aspect to this issue.

"Steam treatments are running up to $2.5 million," the group said, "whereas PPO starts at $500,000. Which (method) do you think most farmers choose? Over 68 percent of almonds are treated with PPO."

Going to court

ANH goes on to say that organic almonds not treated with PPO may be pasteurized with steam. But the heat may oxidize the omega-3 fatty acids in almonds, which will potentially turn them rotten and create free radicals which are suspected of playing a role in the development of a host of other degenerative medical problems, including the development of cancer.

What's more, the ANH points out, "there is no labeling requirement to show that almonds have been steamed or treated with PPO, so consumers are misled into thinking they are eating truly raw almonds when in fact they are not.

"Labeling is an absolute necessity for consumers to make an informed choice," the group said.

ANH-USA has filed an Amicus Curiae brief to the US Court of Appeals, which is deciding a lawsuit between almond ranchers and the USDA. Plaintiffs seek to reverse the "almond rule."

In today’s life we often find ourselves long on things to do and short on sleep.  As a result, many Americans have turned to so called “high energy” drinks.  Some of the popular energy drinks include Red Bull, Monster Energy and 5 Hour Energy.  These companies represent their drinks to be a convenient surge of energy in a can.  But many believe they are dangerously charged with caffeine and artificial stimulants.

Cory Terry was a 33 year old non-smoking father from Brooklyn, NY, who drank Red Bull on a regular basis.  One fateful day in 2011, Terry drank a Red Bull and then engaged in a basketball game.  During the game, Cory suffered a heart attack and died.  This has now resulted in an 85 million dollar wrongful death lawsuit filed against Red Bull.

Claimant’s attorney maintains that Red Bull is negligent, in that their drink contains stimulants and additives that are more dangerous than what Red Bull represents and would have consumers believe.  A Red Bull spokesperson  in electing not to comment on the lawsuit, stated that Red Bull is “safe to consume, [with] more than 5 billion cans consumed last year.”

Unfortunately, this is not the first claim of its kind to be made relative to high energy drinks.  In 2012 a lawsuit was filed against Monster Energy, when a 14 year old girl died from cardiac arrest after consuming two cans of Monster Energy drink within 24 hours.  In addition, the NY Times has reported that 5 Hour Energy drinks have been cited in reports related to at least 13 deaths over a four year period.

In light of genetics and a variety of potential health factors, it may be difficult to prove negligence and that the Red Bull drink was the proximate cause of Terry’s death.  Notwithstanding, this case has raised a credible issue as to the safety of high energy drinks, especially with regard to consumption by children.  Perhaps it is time we all follow the advice of doctors, that sleep is the best and safest restorative remedy for lack of energy.

Discover the amazing healing power of oregano

Discover the amazing healing power of oregano

(NaturalNews) Seductively aromatic and bountiful in flavor, oregano is one of the most commonly used herbs in the world. But beyond the rich zest it adds to food, oregano is also a nutritional and medicinal powerhouse, regarded by many as one of nature's perfect antibiotics. In fact, this amazing herb is loaded with so many antioxidants, vitamins and other beneficial compounds that it would be foolish not to consume it regularly for good health.

Many people in the natural health community are already aware of oil of oregano, which, like its name implies, is the oil derived from oregano. Particularly when harvested from wild varieties of oregano, this oil has been shown to be a powerful antibiotic, antifungal, antiparasitic, antiviral, antihistamine and yeast-inhibiting medicine unlike anything ever concocted in a pharmaceutical laboratory. And yet this is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the benefits of oregano.

Oregano ranks near the top of the ORAC scale

A member of the mint family, oregano ranks near the top of the list when it comes to overall antioxidant content. According to PreventDisease.com, dried oregano ranks fifth overall on the Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) scale, which measures the antioxidant density of foods and herbs. Oregano is actually higher on the list than other more well-known antioxidant foods like acai berry and sumac.

Among oregano's many antioxidant flavonoids and polyphenols are thymol, pinene, limonene, carvacrol, ocimene and caryophyllene, which collectively give the herb its enticing and pleasant aroma. Each of these compounds is also what makes oregano medicinal, as they synergistically deter infections, cramping, indigestion and various other conditions.

"Oregano contains at least four compounds that soothe coughs and 19 chemicals with antibacterial action that may help reduce body odor," writes Karen Foster for PreventDisease.com. "The ingredients in oregano that soothe coughs may also help un-knot muscles in the digestive tract, making oregano a digestive aid."

Oregano can help prevent a host of illnesses, including metabolic syndrome and cancer

These same compounds can also help prevent oxidative damage in cells, effectively protecting the body against chronic illness. Individuals with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and various other markers of metabolic syndrome or heart disease, for instance, stand to gain substantially from the inclusion of more oregano in their diets.

The same goes for people with dirty colons, chronic inflammation, osteoporosis, allergies, chronic fatigue and headaches. Numerous studies have identified oregano as containing active compounds that target each of these maladies and more, all without triggering any harmful side effects. Oregano is also a highly effective preventative food against cancer.

One particular study out of United Arab Emirates University found that oregano targets cancer by specifically triggering cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, which is another way of saying cancer cell suicide. In other words, consuming oregano can help the body get rid of malignant cancer cells, while at the same time protecting healthy cells.

"Whenever possible, choose fresh oregano over the dried form of the herb since it is superior in flavor," adds Foster, noting that dried oregano is also suitable, so long as it is organic or nonirradiated. "Just like with dried oregano, try to buy that which has been organically grown since this will give you more assurance that it has not been irradiated."

To learn more about the benefits of oregano, be sure to check out Foster's full report:
