WASHINGTON, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- The U.S. Postal Service, facing a deficit that will reach $9.2 billion this fiscal year, could be forced to close this winter, officials say.
"Our situation is extremely serious," Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe said in a New York Times article published Monday.
Donahoe has been advocating spending cutbacks recently that would eliminate Saturday mail delivery, close as many as 3,700 postal locations and result in layoffs of 120,000 employees, nearly 20 percent of the Postal Service's workforce.
The delivery service, which has no-layoff clauses with unions, faces higher costs, particularly for labor, which accounts for 80 percent of its expenses.
It also has seen revenue decline as the Internet has resulted in fewer people relying on traditional mail as they use other delivery companies, e-mail, pay bills online, and receive news and advertisements online.
"The situation is dire," said Sen. Thomas R. Carper, D-Del., chairman of the Senate subcommittee that oversees the Postal Service. "If we do nothing, if we don't react in a smart, appropriate way, the Postal Service could literally close later this year. That's not the kind of development we need to inject into a weak, uneven economic recovery."

The production of HFCS involves vats of murky fermenting liquid, various enzymes, fungus and chemical tweaking, all of which take place in one of 16 chemical plants located in the Corn Belt.
HFCS is produced by processing corn starch to yield glucose, and then processing the glucose to produce a high percentage of fructose. Basically, white starch is turned into crystal clear syrup. The process is much more complicated of course.
Most of the corn is grown as a monoculture, meaning that the land is used solely for corn, not rotated among crops. Monocultures can deplete the nutrients in soil and lead to erosion, so they require more pesticides and fertilizer. Then of course, add to the mix the fact that it stems from GM corn and you have the ultimate Franken-syrup sweetener.
"The environmental footprint of HFCS is deep and wide," Pollan says. "Look no farther than the dead zone in the Gulf [of Mexico], an area the size of New Jersey where virtually nothing will live because it has been starved of oxygen by the fertilizer runoff coming down the Mississippi from the Corn Belt."

By now the terms organic, all natural and fair trade are symbolic words used by food manufacturers to persuade shoppers to purchase their products by insinuating that their product is safe, and a better alternative. Most shoppers rarely take the time to actually read the labels to know what exactly they are buying. And sadly most either don't know the dangers contained therein, or even worse, don't care.
But for those of us who do read labels, food manufacturers have cleverly replaced the name "HFCS" with the names Inulin, Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Iso Glucose, Chicory and Fruit Fructose, and you'll be surprised as to where all your efforts to avoid HFCS, may have been overlooked.
The following items often (surprisingly) contain HFCS: Cottage cheese, salad dressing, steak sauce, canned soup, cough syrup, breakfast cereal, yogurt, bread, pastries, jelly and jam.

It would appear that since these man made concoctions have surfaced the sicker and more obese the population has become. Today Americans consume more HFCS than sugar. One can assume there is indeed a correlation.
Fructose should come from eating whole fruits, in moderation. Everything that the human body needs to be healthy and vibrant is already in nature. No one can replace, or improve, the perfect balance of nature.
It is the people that control the outcome of every intention brought forth by the food companies and government officials. It really comes down to the consumers demanding pristine foods. And the best way to "demand" is by boycotting all foods containing HFCS, and GMO's.

Troy Dangerfield now tells SF Weekly that “three or four” SFPD officers accompanied two Apple security officials in an unusual search of a Bernal Heights man’s home.
Dangerfield says that, after conferring with Apple and the captain of the Ingleside police station, he has learned that plainclothes SFPD officers went with private Apple detectives to the home of Sergio Calderon, a 22-year-old resident of Bernal Heights. According to Dangerfield, the officers “did not go inside the house,” but stood outside while the Apple employees scoured Calderon’s home, car, and computer files for any trace of the lost iPhone 5. The phone was not found, and Calderon denies that he ever possessed it.
In an interview with SF Weekly last night, Calderon told us that six badge-wearing visitors came to his home in July to inquire about the phone. Calderon said none of them acknowledged being employed by Apple, and one of them offered him $300, and a promise that the owner of the phone would not press charges, if he would return the device.
The visitors also allegedly threatened him and his family, asking questions about their immigration status. “One of the officers is like, ‘Is everyone in this house an American citizen?’ They said we were all going to get into trouble,” Calderon said.

According to the research team, using the oil in foods and in clinical agents could prevent food-borne illnesses and even treat antibiotic-resistant infections.
The scientists tested coriander oil against 12 bacterial strains, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Bacillus cereus and MRSA. The results? In all of the tested strains of bacteria, the growth of the disease-causing germs was greatly reduced. In fact, most were killed when exposed to solutions containing 1.6% coriander oil or less.
The new study shows more than the fact coriander oil has an antibacterial effect. It also provides an explanation for how the natural substance works. The results indicate that coriander oil damages the membrane surrounding the bacterial cell. In a press statement, Dr. Fernanda Domingues, who led the study, explained coriander oil disrupts the barrier between the cell and its environment and inhibits essential processes which ultimately lead to death of the bacterial cells.
The research suggestions that coriander oil could have important applications both in preventing food borne illnesses and in treating superbug infections. "In developed countries, up to 30% of the population suffers from food-borne illness each year. This research encourages the design of new food additives containing coriander oil that would combat food-borne pathogens and prevent bacterial spoilage," Dr. Domingues stated. "Coriander oil could also become a natural alternative to common antibiotics. We envisage the use of coriander in clinical drugs in the form of lotions, mouth rinses and even pills; to fight multidrug-resistant bacterial infections that otherwise could not be treated. Don't confuse curry powder with turmeric. Turmeric is the substance that gives curry its yellowish color, while curcumin is the active ingredient of turmeric that offers the health benefits known in earlier medical traditions and that is being discovered now in western nutritional medicine. How to Take Curcumin

The problem with curcumin is similar to that of resveratrol: The stomach won't let it pass through to the small intestines enough to appear significantly in blood serum, where it has to be for cellular nourishment.
That's easily resolved with turmeric by combining it with fats. Cold pressed oils, coconut oil, organic butter, ghee, raw milk, and organic cottage cheese are optimum choices. It has also been discovered that heat helps absorption without decomposing the curcumin in turmeric. Some users mix turmeric in warm milk. After all, curry involves cooking with some sort of fat.
The curcumin extract capsules, used for extreme conditions or by those who can afford the convenience, pose the same absorption problems with a different set of solutions. This extract is usually in capsules. Enteric coating needs to be used to keep the capsule intact in the stomach yet to allow it to break down in the small intestines, allowing for immediate absorption into the blood.

Then add sea salt to flavor, a little more coconut or olive oil, and squeeze in the juice of a lime. It's simple, delicious, nutrient dense, and beats food from a jar or can any day of the week.
